Her Body and My Soul have been Raped
My thoughts on recent spurt in reported rape cases:-
(A) Rape is one of the most loathful crime much more than murder. It has been happening all through history though there is a definite increase in number of cases and brutality of act even after discounting hype created by constant media coverage and increased reporting by victims which wasn't the case earlier.
(B) Why does rape take place?
- Is it because perperator of the crime is devoid of sex - not correct as married / well to do persons who have access to normal / paid sex are also involved.
- Is it because the victim is seductively dressed - not correct as girls in "decent clothes" have also been victims (dress has nothing to do with it anyway).
- Is it because of frustration in the mind of perperator of crime - possibly due to cultural, financial or educational shortcomings due to imbalance in the society.
- Is it because he is mentally sick - not necessary though some of them are actually medically sick in mind though we can safely brand all rapists as mentally sick.
- Is it because the person is influenced by external inputs like movies or previous cases - very much true.
- Is it alcohol or drugs's temp effect - quite possible
(C) Rapes can be classified into:-
1) forced sex with own wife / partner (who may be unwilling at that time though willing at other times)
2) coerced or forced sex with a known person in office/relations/residential complex (who trusted the perperator enough to be in a situation/location where rapist could take advantage of available situation)
3) forced sex (usually more violent) on an unknown person picked up from any where with a prior intention of doing the crime especially children or single ladies.
4) forced sex with a person in pre planned manner to emphasize superiority due to caste / religion / dispute especially in rural areas.
I believe first two catagories are a social problem while last two are a law and order issue.
(D) what to do?
1) Exemplary and swift death penalty to an accused (other than prima facie cases of false reports) within 30 days of reporting to create fear psychosis in the environment because presently it's missing. One thinks one can get away by lacunae in judicial system.
2) Social boycott of the family of accused even though it is debatable for obvious reasons. Aim is prevention by creating a scenario of "taboo"
3) Stoppage of all priviledges to accused and his family like pay/pension/ voting rights /all Govt schemes with the same aim as for point no 2.
4) Exemplary punishment to officials not performing as required while handling such cases - police/ doctors/ administrators/ politicians and bosses / teachers as the case may be.
5) Zero tolerance for any colour being given to a rape case - religious / political / casteism / national etc. A rape being a rape no such speeches / protests / comments / debates be allowed in media or public domain.
6) Systematic and sustained education and senstization of civic society and agencies of policy making, law enforcement and judiciary.
(E) There is likelyhood of some innocents being cought on the wrong side of law / social status by my suggestions but for some time very very serious implementation will ensure that subsequently there is almost no such victimisation as the message would have seeped in the psyche.
I would love to see an Indian society in my lifetime where I don't have to live with constant fear for safety of my daughters. Guys and girls - plz pray, speak and act now.
