Men, Power, Libido and Control
I have been following recent happenings in the country specially since Dec 2012 rape case with utter dismay and anguish. Despite eruption of emotions publicly and follow up with some legal fine tuning there hasn't been any change in the ground reality and very specially in the mind set. Number of rape cases keep getting reported - some with minors and even toddlers. My guess is that majority are not reported. Hardly any progress has been made in legal cases where perpetrators of this heinous crime have been apprehended. There appears to be not let up in the frequency, ferocity or spread of the menace.
Another issue that I had noted earlier that heavy majority of rape, attempted rape and assault cases involve person(s) known to the victim including relations, neighbors, friends, colleagues, bosses and even fathers, has been overwhelmingly confirmed. Expressed or implied power wielded by these men and the intrinsic trust reposed by the victims on these relationships appears to give an undue advantage to the beasts.
Recent cases has exposed another domain that people from so called righteous professions - Religion, Higher Judiciary and Media are not insulated from this disease. While age was never a restrictive factor in bringing out the devil in a criminal, I had hoped that education, close exposure to sufferings of previous victims, experience, having daughters / sisters at home and knowledge of the consequences of such a demonic act would have kept people from these professions wary of losing control of their libido. Alas! I have been proven wrong again.
Delay and miscarriage of natural justice is further giving me pain. Where are the people today who had claimed to hang the violators and killers of Nirbhaya within 90 days when we are about to complete anniversary of the dastardly crime. Legal technicalities and the cliched claims of providing full opportunity to accused give me perception of failure of justice system in our country. It takes umpteen days to locate and arrest a spiritual guru, his accused son is still untraceable and a prominent media person cannot be forced to appear for giving his statement despite a NBW. Great!!!
Two sets of rules or law exist in our country is beyond doubt now. A common person who is alleged to have been involved in a petty crime is located, arrested, interrogated, slandered and jailed with or without a trial for years while a powerful person with so called credentials like head of a media house can't be located what to say of arresting / interrogating or convicting him. A higher judiciary person is not even named till internal enquiry is over by an SC Panel for a crime for which a common person would have been publicly lynched.
Men with power in head and libido in groin often lose control of their sense of judgement about right or wrong. It's no secret that they consider all women subordinates (and male in case of a gay boss) as their personal property because they control their destiny (career). Unfortunately it often manifests into incidents of sexual misconduct by men in power. Some times it is consensual, some times it is a compromise by the subordinate and some time it is a tool used by the subordinate for career progression but more often than not it is forced. I wish women could learn to say NO with authority every time they mean it and men could learn to accept a NO as a NO (and not as may be or yes).
Finally I have a grievance against women too. Far too many of them, who have power and control, do not take appropriate action - to prevent or to punish, when a women is victimized. I would urge them to do something about these issues rather than hope that men would understand. Remember men with power and libido always misbehave - be it Dushasana, Ravana, Clinton, Berlusconi, Asaram, Tejpal or Justice Ganguly. You must control them.
